Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of people just like you who know they have at least one good book in them to write but don’t know how to get it published… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida!
We all have a little bit of the fanboy or fangirl in us; sometimes it surprises us in the times it chooses to surface. For me, one of those days came in April 2017, when I was a keynote speaker at a business writers conference in Birmingham, Alabama, and I met Jeff Herman, a fellow conference guest whose work as a writer and literary agent has meant so much to me over the past 25 years.
JEFF HERMAN podcast excerpt: "There has been a huge consolidation of book publishers. Instead of a universe of 30 to 40 viable (major) publishers, we have about 30 independents where there used to be 100. Then you have the Big 5 conglomerate book publishers. Within them, they each have about 20 divisions, including the legacy brand names and catalogues that go back as far as 200 years."
If you’ve ever written or thought about writing a book—unagented—Jeff Herman’s Guide to Book Publishers, Editors & Literary Agents: Who They Are, What They Want, How to Win Them Over is the one book you must own and study. If you only know me as the host of this podcast, you may not know that I make my living as a co-author of more than 15 books. In my early days, I always kept a copy of the Herman bible on my desk. Jeff and his wife Deborah Herman also wrote another important book for any would-be author’s library: Write the Perfect Book Proposal. This is Jeff’s second visit to Mr. Media.
